Consecration of Canada to the Blessed Virgin Mary

As Christians we are called and consecrated to follow Christ in the world which is continuously challenged by self-centred secular and popular culture. Despite our failures and weaknesses, our call to holiness demands that we make constant and conscious efforts through prayer and by participation in the sacraments of the Church, to withstand these challenges. As we entrust our entire being to God the source of all goodness, He enables us to persevere in holiness by the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, alive and active in the Church, enables us to grow in our faith, deepening our commitment to holiness and love for Christ and His Church.

Mary, the mother of Jesus is the best and supreme example of human response to God’s loving call to holiness. She shines as the perfect icon of accepting grace from God and responding in faith by co-operating with the Lord in the fulfilment of His plan for our salvation. To enable the faithful to follow her path of total dedication and consecration of self to God, the Bishops of Canada have decided to Consecrate Canada to the Blessed Virgin Mary on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Confederation.

Given the challenges we face today for a new evangelization; the hope is that each parish will welcome a renewed act of consecration of Our Lady as an important opportunity for the church in Canada. Hence each pastor of our diocese, is invited to lead his congregation in the prayer of consecration, during the weekend Masses, on Canada Day (Saturday July 1, 2017 and on Sunday, July 2, 2017). The consecration prayer shall be after the prayer following Communion and before the final blessing
